Poem: Hair Salon

What’s better than hanging out
At the hair salon with a girlfriend
On a Saturday night
Dreaming about summer
Wishing our hair was long
And as yellow as the sunshine
On our faces

It makes me think of
Long drives up the hill
On a warm summer night
When the world is full of lightning bugs
And crickets hum outside the car window

When he put his arm around me
And whispered against my neck
“There’s only you, and no one else”
And my heart pounded
And my breath caught

And I felt young, and so alive.

So alive, so alive.
